Consumers need to be aware that it is a crime to provide false or inaccurate information when applying for a home loan. But many forms of mortgage fraud are committed without the buyer’s participation and can result in substantial losses. Mortgage fraud has become increasingly common across the country, particularly as it relates to foreclosure rescue and loan modification scams and short sale scams.
